Santos Road was named after the Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont. He was the first passenger on a commercial flight and his girlfriend, a Cuban-American woman named Aida de Acosta, who became the second passenger on a commercial flight.



Santos-Dumont was born on 20 July 1873 in Cabangu in the Brazilian town of Palmira (today named Santos Dumont) in the state of Minas Gerais in southeast Brazil. He was the youngest of seven children born to Henrique Dumont, an engineer of French descent, and Francisca de Paula Santos. Santos-Dumont's father managed a coffee plantation on land owned by his wife's family, and later bought land in Ribeirão Preto on which he established a plantation of his own. His extensive use of labor-saving inventions earned him a fortune, and he was known for a time as the "Coffee King of Brazil."



His family owned the land that Santos Road was built on in 1892. They sold the land at the top of the road to build a church, St. Thomas a Becket and collected money from local parishioners but the money collected was stolen by a local parish priest who was then banished to France and finally Turkey where he died. The church was eventually built with the Tower being added in 1926.



Opposite the church was a library and the famous long reading room. The library was the scene of a sex scandal in the late 1970s.



Santos Road for many years backed on to the Convent of the Sacred Heart where teachers also trained and no. 34 Santos Road housed many of the student teachers. In the grounds of the school was the primary school, St, Joseph's.



Santos Road has housed some famous residents including the TV Presenter Paul Ross. It's oldest resident is Maureen Duke who has lived in the road for nearly 70 years.
