why is this road called Eardly road and when were the first homes nearest the station built?

Eardley Road was built around 1878. The same year eighteen building plots near the station were auctioned.



The station was called "Greyhound Lane Station" back then.



I believe it was named after Rev. Stenton Eardley who became the first vicar of the Immanuel Church in Stretham Common from 1854 to his death in 1883. He was very active in the temperance movement of the time and was a popular local figure who built the Beehive Coffee Tavern on Streatham High Road. He is buried in Norwood Cemetary

Thank you so much. I lived in Eardley Road with my five children for a few years in the late 50s and early sixties and it holds many good memories do you know if there are websites for Eardley Road, and Eardley Rd Primary school. Everything I've looked at seems to list housing prices, commercial or business facts but nothing about the social history.

I thank you so much for that info; it will help me in writing about the time between 1958 to 1966 when we lived at 195 Eardley road. By the way, we brought that property for the princely sum of 1400 pound sterling. We were later told that we paid too much. It should have been 900 pounds. We was robbed!

We were told that the house was only 78 years old at the time. Now I learn from you that it was more like 80 years old! DAMN!
