Hi, I am seeking to find out if there were refugees from Nazism living in a large house in Bray Court, Maidenhead between 1940-1943? Are there any records with the local council or a local archive? Has this house since been demolished? Would appreciate your answer. Thank you.

I've just had a quick look in the newspaper archive and there are two articles.
The first is from the Gloucestershire Echo dated Friday 21 October 1938 which mentions a concert held by 30 Basque refugee children from Bray Court.
The second is from the Reading Mercury dated Saturday 21 October 1939 which is about a concert held by children from the Czech Refugee Trust Fund Colony at Bray Court.
After the war, the House became a hotel. It even survived the motorway being built nearby and had a slip road to the M4 constructed in its garden.
The house last appears on the 1973 Ordnance survey map but has been demolished and replaced with houses on the 1983 map.
Hi, I have lived in Bray Court since 1995 and have always been interested in the history of the old house that was known by locals as the house that had a window for every day of the year. There were Basque children who were accommodated in Bray Court as refugees of the Spanish Civil War and I have seen photographs in the local Library and on line of children wearing their Basque clothes taken within the grounds of the house. Whilst digging in the garden I found a small glass inkwell, of the type that sat in a recess at the top of the old style wooden desks. I have kept it and like to speculate who would have used it. The house was also previously used for treatment/recuperation by shell shocked soldiers during WW1 and later on as nurses accommodation. The only " survivors " from the old building is the beautiful horse chestnut tree o/s No 13 and the original stable wall opposite.
