I live in Blackboy Lane (and lovely it is). The reason for the name is nothing to do with the slave trade, or people of colour. It derives from the name of the inn that stood at the end of it. Like most inns with such a name the derivation dates back to the English Civil War and the flight of Charles II via Shoreham, a little further up the coast. Charles had the nickname "The Black Boy" on account of his swarthy complexion, and this survives in the names of inns and roads. As he passed through Runcton, very close to here, it's not beyond belief that Charles took temporary refuge in the inn in Fishbourne. Unfortunately the inn is no longer, but the building survives as rented apartments - one of which is the King Charles II room.

Unfortunately, there are some who wish to get the name changed, not understanding its origin. Perish the thought that our heritage should disappear because of ignorant do-gooders. Along with my four King Charles Cavaliers I will fight the notion of any change!
