The Village of Brockdish in the County of Norfolk

I used to stay in Brockdish with my Grandparents in the 70's and 80's.

They lived in Bourne House on Grove Road. I remember my Grandfather used to measure the depth of the ford each day and was always concerned if it was too low or too high.

A kind old lady called Mrs Lang lived next door. She was friends with my Grandparents and I remember her broad old Norfolk accent.

I sometimes went to a tiny Methodist School and remember it being the only school I actually enjoyed. I think there were only 30 kids in the whole school. Lunchtimes were spent digging holes in the playground for some reason.

I was told that the triangle of land near the ford was a plague pit where they used to bury bodies during the black death. It probably isn't true.

I remember building dens out of old corrugated iron sheets towards Thorpe Abbots and the jumble sales they used to hold in the Village Hall.

I always wondered about the origin of the name. Was it Brock as in Badgers or just meant a place where there was a Brook the ran through a Ditch?
