Reader Comments for Stonecross Lea
It was named after Stonecross Farm which stood at the junction of Capstone Road and Street End Road.
This was in the late 1800's and early 1900s and was the centre of Luton when it was a very small village separate from Chatham or Gillingham.
Maps show that by the 1950s the farm was in ruins.
As for the Romans. Stone Cross farm was a short distance from the Rochester to Canterbury Roman Road.
It was common to have roadside shrines. Maybe this was Christianised at a later date and replaced by a cross.
I don't think human sacrifice was likely. More likely passing Romans would pour wine or scented oil as an offering to the shrine.
