It was a large building with grassland stretching down to the railway line.
More like a lawn with beautiful trees and some times cattle or sheep seemingly to avoid mowing.
There were two entrances, one being a driveway by the railway cottage where Mr. Fox and his family lived.
Mr. Fox worked as a guard on the railway.
The second entrance was further back up Syward Road with a dwelling that appeared as a 'gatehouse' and still survives to the present day.
I lived with my parents in Casterbridge Road in around 1959/60 at the age of 7 or 8yrs often walking around the fields and entering the lodge grounds from the rear.
We had a friend Timothy; he was the Son of the Lawson family that lived there.
We realised the family had left and at the same time the trees in the grounds were cut down.
On the final occasion the fallen wood from the trees had been removed.
As we walked by the vacated lodge there was the stench of paraffin seemingly strongest coming from the main entrance, the doorway was wide open!
We continued on to the railway cottage entrance where the driveway was roped off with a new "No Entry Keep Out" notice was hanging from it!
My friend Rodney who was with me was called indoors by his Mother Mr.Fox's Wife, I was ordered to go home.
It was whilst walking back home through the cutting to Casterbridge Road smoke and flames rose into the sky from Syward Lodge. Whatever was supposed to happen had not gone to plan; I recall at least one fire engine went rushing down the road shortly afterwards.
