My husbands family come from Brightlingsea. His mother was Dorothy Fieldgate. His great grandfather was Robert Miles Fieldgate 1822 - 1892 - and he was born in Brightlingsea. I have visited Brightlingsea and saw the road Fieldgate Dock and would love to know where the name came from. It’s obviously named after the family and I would love to know any information regarding this. Jean Goodman
Hi Jean, Yes Fieldgate dock is either named after my Grandfather John W Fieldgate or the family business William Fieldgate & Son I believe.
My Grandfather had Shipbrokerage and Surveying business with offices there. I understand that his father did so before him but I am unsure of his exact location. I live in Australia but have a relative based in the UK who did extensive family tree.
