It comes from the time it was near the grounds of Chetnotrie House a large 17 bedroom house that is still off Norctorum Road.
Maps of the 1880s show a 'Riding' looping past Chetnotrie. A 'Riding' is a track, especially for horse riding.
Birkenhead Riding Club used to own a field at The Ridings, Noctorum. They held annual shows and gymkhanas there.
Maps from 1936 show The Ridings as it is now. A short section of the original track made up into a road. The remainder survived as a footpath which connected to the junction of Westway and Noctorum Avenue.
This disappeared when the housing developments were built in the late sixties.
